BUTTERWORTH, Sept 16 — The director-general of the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) is in Sabah to coordinate disaster relief operations with other agencies, including the Civil Defence Force, the Social Welfare Department, as well as state- and district-level disaster management committees.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said this was following the immediate approval of an allocation of RM10 million from the National Disaster Fund that was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday.
“Through this RM10 million, assistance will not only be given in cash to every family whose house is affected by landslides or floods, but will also be used to build new houses under the Temporary People’s Housing Project (PPRS) for those who lost their homes,” he told a media conference here today.
He added that the number of houses needed to be constructed for disaster victims would be determined through the close cooperation with the state- and district-level disaster management committees.
“This is crucial so that the aid distributed actually reaches those in need,” he said.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Central Disaster Management Committee chairman, emphasised that the government is committed to ensuring the welfare of flood and landslide victims in Sabah is given due attention. — Bernama
