MELAKA: Dividing society for personal or political gain must not be tolerated, says PKR deputy secretary-general Aidi Amin Yazid.
In a statement on Thursday (Dec 18), he said divisive practices undermine national unity and weaken the foundations of a plural society, stressing that Malaysians must collectively uphold the spirit of nationhood.
Aidi said the foundation of togetherness appeared to be increasingly fragile, warning against politics that incite hatred and turn citizens against one another.
He stressed that politics to secure voter support should never come at the expense of human dignity or be used as a tool to divide society.
Aidi said the nation’s achievements over the past three years seem to have been overlooked, even considering that public expectations are hard to meet.
“This government’s determination to pursue improvement is clearly more evident than in the past,” he said, noting that Malaysia recorded 5.2% economic growth in the third quarter, its strongest quarterly expansion since 2022.
“We remain on track to achieve the full-year economic growth target of between 4.0% and 4.8%,” he said.
Aidi also welcomed the role of the opposition in providing checks and balances but urged them to contribute constructive ideas and solutions.
On national unity, he said the mastery of the national language should not be disputed, describing it as the heart of social cohesion.
He added that Malaysians should not be swayed by incitement that downplays fundamental matters, but reflect on the sacrifices of previous generations instead.
He also reminded the people that the freedoms they enjoy today should not be taken for granted.
