PKR vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad today cautioned party members against being overly eager or hasty in nominating candidates for the deputy presidency.
Responding to the wave of support for Nurul Izzah Anwar to contest the post currently held by Rafizi Ramli, Nik Nazmi said the nomination of candidates should be done in an orderly fashion while considering the party’s interests.
He said PKR members were free to declare their support for Rafizi, Nurul Izzah, or even Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, but maintained that such actions should not affect the party’s stability or image, Sinar Harian reported.
“No one can question Nurul Izzah‘s capabilities. The struggles she has endured all this while clearly prove her fortitude in sticking to her principles.
“However, we must look at the whole picture. None of us should be overly eager because we want to oppose a certain group, and end up doing something that leads to negative implications for the party,” he was quoted as saying.
Nominations for PKR’s central leadership elections opened today and close at 11.59pm tomorrow.
Numerous top and divisional leaders have stated their support for Nurul Izzah to contest the deputy president’s post, while a handful have called for Saifuddin to vie for the position.
This followed Rafizi’s leave of absence after the PKR divisional polls, which saw the defeat of several bigwigs aligned with him, purportedly including Nik Nazmi.
Rafizi has confirmed that he will defend his deputy presidency, while Nurul Izzah said she would make “the best decision possible” following calls for her to run for the post.
