Barisan Nasional component parties should not air their grievances with one another in the open, says the coalition’s deputy chairman, Mohamad Hasan.
Mohamad, also known as Tok Mat, said misunderstandings among component parties must be handled with tact, and that everyone’s focus should be on strengthening the coalition.
He said Umno, MCA and MIC have been allies since the days of the Alliance party and should not voice their dissatisfaction with one another in public, Utusan Malaysia reported.
“In any form of partnership, even between a husband and wife, there are bound to be disputes. We don’t want these minor disputes to cause our decades-long friendship to be affected.
“I hope that all parties can calm down and put their accusations to rest. What’s important is that BN rises again.
“The same goes for Umno leaders. We should focus on how we can strengthen the party instead of exposing the internal weaknesses (in BN),” the Umno deputy president said.
MIC’s future came under scrutiny after deputy president M Saravanan said the party’s direction would be decided at its annual general meeting in October.
Saravanan said MIC felt like an “unwanted guest” in the current government, with no posts offered despite the presence of senior political figures in its ranks.
On Saturday, MIC president SA Vigneswaran said the party was prepared to engage in discussions with any political party to ensure its survival and better serve the Indian community.
BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, however, insisted that MIC’s future would be more secure if it remained with the coalition.
