KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20 (Bernama) — The Ministry of Digital will engage with the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) to bolster collaboration in showcasing the expertise and achievements of Malaysian academia in artificial intelligence (AI) on the global stage.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said Malaysia possesses exceptional local talent in AI education, and his ministry plans to organise a programme to showcase the country’s capabilities in collaboration with global partners.

“It is timely for us to engage with the MOE and MOHE on the possibility of jointly hosting an event with international partners to highlight Malaysia’s academic strength in the field of AI on the global stage.

“We can emphasise that Malaysia not only has the infrastructure, but also the educational expertise and student talent to position the country as a hub for AI education,” he said.

He said this to reporters after launching the Great Malaysia AI Hackathon 2025, which entered the ASEAN Records as the Largest On-Site AI Hackathon. The event was organised by the Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU), in collaboration with the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and Amazon Web Services (AWS), here today.

Also present were APU chief executive officer Datuk Parmjit Singh, AWS’s APJ Go-To-Market head Peter Murray, MDEC vice president (Digital Adoption) Wan Murdani Wan Mohamad, as well as invited speakers for the Tech Talks.

Commenting on the programme, Gobind said it was in line with the ministry’s policy to promote and encourage innovation in the field of AI.

“We all recognise that in today’s technological landscape, the focus must be on how technology can address challenges that were previously unsolvable due to the lack of adequate data and technology,” he said.

“But now, with the establishment of Malaysia’s AI ecosystem – supported by the right infrastructure and, most importantly, the capability to develop talent – we are able to leverage technology and data to create digital solutions,” he said.

Gobind added that the organisation of the hackathon would further accelerate AI innovation in Malaysia, and such initiatives should serve as a model for industry stakeholders.

Meanwhile, APU in a statement said that with a total of 1,741 participants – comprising 1,547 university students and 194 industry professionals – the hackathon brought together a dynamic ecosystem of future talent, academia and industry leaders to drive Malaysia’s digital economy, while also securing a place in the ASEAN Records.

As one of the largest AWS-powered university hackathons in the Asia Pacific, the event engaged 20 industry mentors and featured a prize pool of RM110,000. Beyond its scale, the hackathon’s achievement was recognised by the ASEAN Records, a platform that honours outstanding accomplishments and unique feats by individuals and organisations across Southeast Asia.
