KUALA LUMPUR: K. Letshanaa made a winning start to her World Championships debut after beating Hong Kong’s Saloni Samirbbai Mehta in the women’s singles opening round on Tuesday.
The world No. 40 survived a scare in the opening game, squandering a 13-5 lead before steadying herself to close it out 21-18 at the Adidas Arena in Paris.
She then wrapped up the contest with a commanding 21-8 in the second game.
It was Letshanaa’s third straight win over Saloni.
The 22-year-old’s victory set her up for a much tougher assignment against India’s P.V. Sindhu, the 2019 world champion, in the second round.
