KOTA BHARU, Oct 25 — The Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) has stressed that mastering Bahasa Melayu must remain a priority for all Malaysians before acquiring proficiency in other foreign languages.
Its Board of Governors member Ahmad Fadhlil Mohamad Pakarul Razy said strengthening the national language does not mean rejecting the importance of foreign languages, but rather ensuring that the younger generation has a strong foundation in Bahasa Melayu as part of their identity and character.
“We must continue efforts to strengthen Bahasa Melayu, but at the same time, there is nothing wrong with learning other languages, as they are important for acquiring knowledge and meeting employment needs.
“However, Bahasa Melayu must never be neglected under any circumstances. It is not merely a communication tool but a reflection of our intellect, values and civilisation,” he told reporters after officiating at the Karnival Lestari Bahasa 2025 held in conjunction with the Kelantan-level National Language Month celebration here today.
He said the organisation of the carnival is timely amid the tide of globalisation and digitalisation, which is changing the way people interact and think.
Therefore, he added that efforts to strengthen Bahasa Melayu must continue to ensure it remains a language of knowledge, the economy and technology. — Bernama
