DAP To Contest Eight Seats In Sabah Polls, Says Loke

KOTA KINABALU, Nov 8 (Bernama) — DAP will contest eight seats in the 17th Sabah state election on Nov 29.

DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said the party will defend six state seats won in the 16th state election in 2020, namely Luyang, Kepayan, Likas, Tanjung Papat, Elopura and Sri Tanjong.

He said the party will also contest in Tanjung Aru for the first time, describing it as a non-safe seat, and another interior seat which will be announced later, but confirmed that the candidate will be a woman.

“There is one interior seat, but discussions are ongoing to avoid overlapping. We will contest it when nominations are confirmed, and our candidate will be a woman.

“All candidates are Sabah-born. There is no issue of us not being a Sabah party. Sabah DAP is led entirely by Sabahans. Fifty per cent of our candidates are women.

“The average age of candidates is 39, making it among the youngest line-ups contesting,” he said when launching the DAP Election Machinery and announcing the party’s candidates for the 17th Sabah State Election here today.

Loke said DAP is confident that its line-up of candidates will be able to put up a strong fight and continue the party’s winning momentum in Sabah.

Sabah DAP chairman Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe, the incumbent for Luyang, will now contest in Likas, while state deputy chairman Datuk Chan Foong Hin, who is also Kota Kinabalu MP and Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister, will contest in Tanjung Aru.

In Elopura, the party will field Sandakan MP and Sabah DAP secretary Vivian Wong Shir Yee, while its state vice-chairman, Datuk Jannie Lasimbang, will defend Kapayan.

The three new faces are DAP Youth vice-chief Tang Szu Ching in Tanjung Papat, Sabah DAP Youth chief Chan Loong Wei in Luyang, and Sabah DAP committee member Philip Yap in Sri Tanjong.

The Election Commission (EC) has set Nov 15 as nomination day for the Sabah state polls, while early voting and polling day are on Nov 25 and Nov 29, respectively.
