Kota Kinabalu MP Chan Foong Hin and Kota Anggerik assemblyman Najwan Halimi are the latest politicians to have been blackmailed over doctored sex videos, joining a list of three PKR MPs who received similar demands over the past two days.
DAP’s Chan, the deputy plantation and commodities minister, told FMT he instructed his office to lodge a report with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission after receiving an email that contained a screenshot of an AI-manipulated video that showed his face, and a demand for US$100,000 to prevent the video from being shared online.
In a Facebook post, Najwan said he has lodged a report with MCMC after receiving a similar email and demand.
The PKR man said he believed the perpetrators were employing the same method that targeted Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli, Subang MP Wong Chen, and Sungai Petani MP Taufiq Johari, all of whom received similar emails.
“I wish to stress that such threats constitute a very serious crime aimed at endangering my safety and tarnishing my dignity,” he said, adding that he will also be lodging a police report.
Najwan, who is Selangor youth, sports and entrepreneurship committee chairman, said such false and defamatory content not only tarnishes the reputation of individuals, but also endangers public safety and harmony.
