KUALA LUMPUR: The Customs Department will hand over 184 cargo and baggage scanning machines to the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) in stages.
Of the total, 132 machines are equipped with artificial intelligence (AI), Customs director-general Datuk Anis Rizana Mohd Zainudin said in a statement.
The machines, which are used to curb smuggling into the country, will be handed over to MCBA in stages.
Separately, Anis said the department has also received 20 more sniffer dogs that have been deployed nationwide. The dogs have already helped in the seizure of 9.8 tonnes of drugs.
The department will also receive three more Mobile Backscatter X-ray units in September 2025 to fight drug smuggling.
“In addition, in July, we were given 24 four-wheel drives for enforcement operations,” she said.
Anis said the department would continue to improve security at the country’s entry and exit points. She urged the public to help efforts to combat the smuggling of cigarettes, alcohol, firecrackers, drugs, and vehicles.
“Smuggling not only results in revenue leakage for the country but also poses a threat to national security and the people’s well-being,” she said.
