ALOR GAJAH: Police will summon the parents of a three-year-old boy who drowned in a swimming pool at a homestay in Durian Tunggal here on Friday night.

Acting Alor Gajah district police chief Deputy Superintendent Azrul Mohamed said the case is being investigated by the Sexual, Women and Children Investigation Division (D11) of the Melaka police contingent headquarters.

He said investigations are being carried out under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for neglect resulting in death.

“The incident was reported on Nov 1 at about 11.45pm when a three-year-old boy was brought to the Melaka Hospital emergency ward unconscious and was confirmed dead.

“Post-mortem results showed that the cause of death was drowning,” he said.

Earlier, the boy was believed to have drowned while celebrating a family day with his parents and seven other families from Temerloh, Pahang, at a homestay equipped with a swimming pool.

It is understood that around 10pm, after the family day games prize-giving ceremony, everyone was inside the house while the boy’s father was preparing a barbecue at the back of the house.

At about 10.50pm, the boy’s uncle saw him floating in the pool beside the homestay and immediately jumped in to pull him out, performing CPR while waiting for the ambulance to arrive.

The ambulance arrived about 40 minutes later and rushed the victim to Melaka Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11.45pm.

The child’s body was later claimed by volunteers from Team UKVJ Melaka and sent to his home in Kampung Sungai Nipah, Sungai Besar, , for burial.
