KUANTAN: Police busted a drug trafficking syndicate in Pahang with the seizure of RM5.34mil worth of drugs in raids in Bentong and Maran last week.

Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said in the raid conducted on Nov 4 in Bentong, the police seized 240 transparent plastic packages, suspected of containing 140.4 kilogrammes of cannabis flowers, worth RM5.04mil.

He said the drug was found in a Toyota Camry car that was abandoned at the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project site.

A check of the vehicle’s registration number found it was registered in the name of a local man with an address in Johor Bahru, he told a press conference at the Pahang Police Contingent Headquarters here on Tuesday (Nov 11).

In the second raid, conducted last Thursday (Nov 6), he said, the police arrested a 37-year-old local man, and seized 102 transparent plastic packages suspected of containing marijuana, weighing 98 kg and worth RM303,800.

He said the seizure was made from a Perodua Ativa car, which was intercepted at the Maran Rest and Recreation Area heading towards Kuala Lumpur.

He added that a urine test also found the suspect positive for amphetamines, and checks revealed he had 10 criminal records related to drug offences.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides the death penalty or life imprisonment and not less than 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction. – Bernama
