PETALING JAYA:

A gun belonging to Hulu Kinta assemblyman Arafat Varisai has been confiscated by the police as part of a probe into a claim that he had made threats and showed the weapon to members during the party’s Perak divisional polls on April 13.

Perak police chief Noor Hisam Nordin said seizing the weapon was standard procedure in investigations into individuals with a firearm permit, Bernama reported.

He also said Perak police filed an application to Bukit Aman to cancel Arafat’s permit on April 18, and that the man had handed over the gun the following day.

“For now, we support cancelling the permit. The weapon is being kept at the Ipoh police headquarters,” he said.

Noor Hisam said investigations were ongoing and that 13 people, including Arafat and the complainant, had been summoned to give their statements.

There was previously a viral video of an individual claiming that Arafat, a two-term assemblyman, had shown a pistol to members who were canvassing for votes.

Arafat had failed to defend his post as Tambun chief during the divisional election on April 13, losing to Shamsul Kamar Ani.
