Continuous downpours leave 400 flood victims in Sabah, as authorities warn of impassable roads

KOTA KINABALU, Sept 14 — The number of flood victims in Sabah has increased to 400 people from 125 families as of 9am today, compared to 391 people from 126 families yesterday.

The Sabah Disaster Management Committee (JPBN), in a statement, said the number of flood victims had, however, dropped to 247 victims (74 families) in Penampang, while flood victims in Beaufort, the number increased to 153 people (51 families).

The victims in Penampang are evacuated at the relief centre (PPS) at Penampang Sports Complex (36 people from six families), Dewan Huguan Siau (147 people from 49 families) and Sekolah Kebangsaan St Paul Kolopis (64 people from 19 families).

Meanwhile, all flood victims in Beaufort are at the permanent relief centre (PPK) in Selagon.

“A total of 22 villages have been affected by the floods, with 14 villages in Penampang and eight in Beaufort,” read the statement.

Meanwhile, the Sabah JPBN also announced that a slope on Jalan Donggongon Papar Spurs had collapsed, making Jalan Papar towards Kota Kinabalu completely impassable.

“The public is advised to take an alternative route to Kota Kinabalu,” it said.

Motorists going to Kota Kinabalu can use Jalan Papar-Kinarut-Lok Kawi.

According to JPBN, flash floods hit several areas in Kota Kinabalu late last night, including Sembulan, Lido, Kolombong, Likas and Manggatal, following continuous heavy rain since yesterday evening. — Bernama
