PUTRAJAYA, Sept 29 — Transport Minister Anthony Loke today stood firm in reminding the public about the importance of using child safety seats, following criticism for his comments on the recent fatal crash at the Bukit Kajang toll plaza.
The controversy began yesterday after Loke, citing preliminary police findings, revealed that the 12-month-old boy killed in the accident was not secured in a child seat.
He had suggested a child seat, if used, might have prevented the death of the toddler who was ejected from the vehicle in the crash. The minister’s remark drew backlash on social media.
Speaking at a press conference today, Loke acknowledged the criticism but stressed that his duty to advocate for children’s safety was paramount.
“As ministers, whatever we do will be criticised. That’s fine, I can be patient. If people want to condemn or scold me, I can accept that. But I remain firm in reminding everyone of the importance of children’s safety,” he said.
“You can criticise me, you can condemn me, but please don’t forget, if there are children in the car, do make sure to use a child seat for their safety,” he added, doubling down on his message.
Loke affirmed that the ministry will now intensify its efforts to raise awareness among parents and guardians about the life-saving value of child safety seats.
The tragic accident on Saturday involved a four-vehicle pile-up allegedly caused by a lorry’s brake failure, which resulted in 12-month-old Amir Husayn being thrown from his family’s car.
The 42-year-old lorry driver involved in the crash has been arrested and is being investigated for reckless driving causing death.
