Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has defended his close ties with the likes of China and the US, saying he had the nation’s interest in mind.
Anwar said he was aware of the criticisms against him being friendly with these nations, but he “did not mind” it, Bernama reported.
“Because my priority is Malaysia’s growth and standing. To succeed economically, we must maintain friendships with all,” he was quoted as saying at a meet-and-greet session with Sabah industry associations in Kota Kinabalu tonight.
Present were caretaker Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor, investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz and communications minister Fahmi Fadzil.
Anwar said the recent 47th Asean Summit demonstrated Malaysia’s ability to bring together 11 member states and major global economic powers.
His comments come two days after he said ties with the two economic powerhouses were vital for Malaysia to ensure that the nation’s electrical and electronic, and semiconductor industries continue to thrive.
Anwar called on federal and state leaders to work with him to elevate Malaysia’s status on the global stage.
He said the government is prioritising economic strength to ensure Malaysia commands respect internationally, not only for its security, but also for its policies.
“My focus is to ensure the success of this country as a great nation with economic strength. This is crucial,” he said.
