GEORGE TOWN: Thaipusam symbolises unity, self-discipline and spiritual strength, values that transcend religion and culture, says Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
“These values form an important foundation for building a harmonious and mutually respectful society,” Chow said in this Thaipusam message.
Penang remains one of the most celebrated locations for the annual three-day Thaipusam festival.
Chow thanked temple management committees, volunteers, security agencies and all parties involved in ensuring the smooth conduct of the annual celebration.
“Culture reflects our identity, and identity reflects our responsibility,” he added, adding that it was important to preserve and pass down cultural heritage.
Meanwhile, Chow said political stability, good governance and inclusive leadership have enabled all communities in Penang to feel heard, respected and involved in the state’s development.
On human capital development, Chow reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to Tamil schools.
Last year, he said the state government allocated RM2.42 million to upgrade school infrastructure, improve digital facilities, install smart boards and create safer, more conducive learning environments.
Citing SJKT Ramakrishnan, Chow said the school has grown from a single building block into a well-equipped institution serving 339 students through sustained support from the state government, local leadership and the Penang Hindu Endowments Board (HEB).
He added that SJKT Rajaji in Air Itam would soon have its own purpose-built campus, strengthening long-term human capital development.
Chow said Thaipusam also contributed significantly to Penang’s tourism sector by stimulating the local economy and benefiting small traders, tourism operators and local communities.
He said the celebration demonstrated how cultural and religious diversity strengthens unity in line with the Penang2030 vision and the Malaysia Madani framework, while serving as a catalyst for socio-economic growth.
The introduction of direct flights between Chennai and Penang, he added, is expected to further strengthen cultural ties and boost tourist arrivals from India.
