KUALA LUMPUR: Badminton great Datuk Lee Chong Wei has congratulated national mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei for delivering Malaysia the “most beautiful gift” on Merdeka Day.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei, who almost split up as a pair five months ago, claimed the in Paris today (Aug 31) after downing China‘s Jiang Zhen Bang-Wei Ya Xin 21-15, 21-14 in Paris.
Chong Wei said it was an inspirational victory for the country.
“Congratulations to Tang Jie and Ee Wei on successfully becoming world champions. This historic moment becomes the most beautiful gift for all Malaysians on National Day,” said Chong Wei on Facebook.
“Your relentless fighting spirit and confidence on court is truly an inspiration to us all. You are style, quality and excellence!
“You have done it, you stood on the highest podium (step) on National Day. Let the national anthem play and let the stripes (of Jalur Gemilang) rise in the Paris air.
“From here on, I hope you continue to work hard.”
Chong Wei is one of many dignitaries who have congratulated the duo for winning what is only Malaysia’s second badminton world title after Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik (men’s doubles) victory in 2022.
Malaysia’s Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah will play China‘s world No. 1 pair Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning of China for the women’s doubles world title later tonight.
