KUALA LUMPUR: Badrul Hisham Shaharin, also known as Chegu Bard, has been detained over a allegedly seditious TikTok video that went viral.

Criminal Investigation Department director Comm Datuk K Kumar said police detected the video on Sept 4, uploaded by account holder Edume @4mrankiamat, featuring a man identified as Chegu Bard delivering a speech deemed to contain seditious elements.

The CID Special Investigation Unit has opened an investigation following a police report lodged on Sept 4.

The case is being probed under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Comm Kumar said the 47-year-old suspect, believed to be the speaker in the video, was detained at about 10.25pm on Friday (Sept 5) to assist investigations, adding that police will apply for remand on Saturday (Sept 6).

Stern action will be taken without compromise against any individual who intentionally makes or spreads seditious statements that can cause public alarm and disrupt harmony in Malaysia, he said.
