ChargEV to announce new EV charging plan: Only available to BYD Atto 2?

ChargEV is about to announce a new EV charging plan on 24 July. The announcement is set to take place on the launch day of the BYD Atto 2 in Malaysia.

Interestingly enough, the new plan will also cover DC Handal chargers. According to the teaser on ChargEV’s Facebook page, the plan will provide discounted charging rates for DC and AC chargers that are under both Charge Point Operators (CPOs).

The teaser seems to hint that the charging plan will cost RM500, although it is unclear whether that is indeed the case. Furthermore, there is no clear indication in the teaser whether the new charging plan will also be made available to other EV owners.

ChargEV previous membership plans

In general, ChargEV has vast experience when it comes to the membership business modal. In fact, that was the original ChargEV business model when the CPO was still under the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC), an agency Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, from 2015 to 2022.

During that period, EV or PHEV owners only have to pay RM240 per year to get unlimited access to ChargEV AC chargers nationwide. Things then began to change when MGTC offloaded ChargEV’s day-to-day operations to Yinson Green Technologies (YGT) via a joint venture.

ChargEV Legacy Plan

YGT then began to evolve ChargEV by not only adding more chargers (both AC and DC) into its network but also amended the business model to support a pay-per-use option. The company also started to phase out physical membership cards and rely more on the ChargEV mobile app.

By then, the original ChargEV membership plan became known as the ChargEV Legacy Plan. While members still get to enjoy unlimited access to AC charging, this only applies to certain chargers, and they have to pay (usually at a discounted rate) for the rest.

ChargEV Yearly Essential Plan

YGT then decided to discontinue the ChargEV Legacy Plan on 31 May 2024. The following month, the company introduced the ChargEV Yearly Essential Plan, which was the CPO’s most comprehensive membership plan at that time.

Priced at RM788 per year, the plan gave customers 50% discounts at all ChargEV AC and DC chargers, while they were also provided with RM50 free credit every month. However, the plan was discontinued only 4 months later on 31 October 2024.
