KUALA LUMPUR: CG Esports’ journey in the M7 World Championships came to an end today after they fell to Myanmar’s Yangon Galacticos (YG) in the final round of the Swiss Stage in Jakarta.
The Malaysian team were swept 2-0 by YG in the do-or-die clash at the MPL Arena’s XO Hall.
Both teams entered the high-stakes best-of-three tie with identical 2-2 records in the Swiss Stage, meaning the loser would be eliminated.
Yangon wasted no time asserting their dominance, requiring just 13 minutes to clinch the opening game after racking up 15 kills to CG’s five and establishing a commanding 14,000 gold lead.
CG attempted to regroup in the second game, producing a far tighter contest, but a single costly error proved decisive.
With CG setting up for a Lord fight at the 22:23 mark, EXP laner Al-Amin “Ye3” Zamri overextended and was picked off by Yangon’s players.
The loss left CG at a numerical disadvantage, which Yangon capitalised on by forcing a full team wipe before marching into the Malaysians’ base to destroy the crystal.
The defeat brings an end to CG’s remarkable run, which began with their title triumph in the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) Academy League Season 3 and continued with a runners-up finish behind Selangor Red Giants (SRG) in MPL MY Season 16.
CG finished joint ninth to 11th overall at the World Championships and will return home with US$20,000 (RM81,100) in prize money.
Their exit leaves SRG as the sole Malaysian representatives heading into the knockout rounds, which begins tomorrow.
