KUALA LUMPUR: The Sultan of Selangor‘s Cup has always been more than just a football match — it is a tradition, a rivalry, and a Causeway reunion of fans.
On Sept 27, the iconic Merdeka Stadium will once again host the event, bringing together Selangor and Singapore for another night of football, nostalgia, and carnival.
The annual fixture kicks off with a veterans’ match at 8pm before the Selangor Selection take on the Singapore Premier League (SPL) Selection at 9pm.
For SPL coach Noor Ali, who once starred for Singapore, the competition’s pull has never faded.
“This rivalry always brings energy and excitement, not just for the players but also for the fans. We are looking forward to a spirited match and to giving everyone at Merdeka Stadium a night to remember,” said the 50-year-old.
The same sentiment was echoed by FA of Singapore (FAS) deputy president Desmond Ong, who called the event a celebration of unity.
“It brings together players, fans, and generations of supporters from both sides, creating memories that go beyond the pitch. We look forward to seeing everyone come together at Merdeka Stadium to enjoy the game and cheer as one football community,” he said in an article published by FAS.
The rivalry between Selangor and Singapore runs deep, with both sides having contested 23 Malaysia Cup finals during the golden years of the 1970s. Selangor hold the upper hand with 12 wins, while in the Sultan of Selangor’s Cup, the Red Giants have lifted the trophy 10 times to Singapore’s seven, with one edition ending in a draw.
Last year, over 20,000 fans braved heavy rain to watch Selangor beat Singapore 2-1 at Merdeka Stadium, their third consecutive triumph.
This year’s edition promises the same atmosphere, with tickets priced at RM15 (regular seating) and RM40 (grandstand) already on sale. The Selangor Selection jersey retails at RM30.
Tickets and jerseys can be purchased at Restoran Uncle K (SACC Mall, Shah Alam), Concorde Hotel Kuala Lumpur, and Concorde Hotel Shah Alam.
