Cameron Highlands landslide: RM2.2mil for slope repair to begin after March

CAMERON HIGHLANDS: Slope rehabilitation at the Puncak Arabella Apartments in Tanah Rata, affected by a landslide last month, is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2026, with RM2.2 million approved for the project.

Cameron Highlands police chief Superintendent Azri Ramli said remedial works at the site will commence once the Northeast Monsoon, which brings heavy rain and flooding, is over, usually by the end of March.

“Only the section near Block C requires repair, while Block B is unaffected. All Block C residents have already moved out, and about 18 people are currently staying at the hall within the apartment premises,” he told the New Straits Times when contacted today.

Meanwhile, Tanah Rata assemblyman Ho Chi Yang said the Pahang government has approved RM2.2 million for the slope repair works, and the Cameron Highlands District Council is expected to open tender for the rehabilitation project soon.

He said that the district office is assisting in finding suitable temporary housing and applying for rental assistance to ease the burden of families currently staying in the hall which serves as a temporary relief centre.

Authorities have declared Block C unsafe for occupancy, prompting residents to be temporarily relocated until all slope repair works are completed.

It is learnt that the proposed repair works are a long-term measure to prevent further soil movement along the affected slope.

Continuous heavy rain on Nov 28 triggered soil movement that blocked the main access road to the Puncak Arabella Apartments, which comprise nine blocks with a total of 346 units.

The Northeast Monsoon, which typically occurs from November to March, brings torrential rainfall to the east coast — Pahang, and Terengganu — as well as parts of Sabah and Sarawak, often triggering floods.
