PETALING JAYA: Bukit Aman has opened three investigations into the misuse of social media, including by a former public servant.

In a statement Tuesday (Sept 16), Bukit Aman Criminal Investigations Department director Comm Datuk M. Kumar said that investigations into the first was related into alleged seditious comments by a former public servant against the government and its leaders while the second was into a video that showed a man questioning the handling of the recent altercations at Kampung Sungai Baru.

“This could spark hostilities between groups within the country,” he said.

The final incident involved a ceremony that imitated royal ceremonial traditions.

“The third case involves the spreading of a video showing a family dressed entirely in yellow and wearing traditional keris-style headgear resembling royal family ceremonial attire during an aqiqah ceremony, which is believed to misuse royal symbols,” he said.

Investigations into all cases are underway, including under the Penal Code and the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

“All three cases clearly show the misuse of social media and digital content that can incite sedition, insult, and hostility within the public. The police emphasise that strict action will be taken against those involved, and that a thorough investigation will be conducted,” he said.
