Police have confirmed that reports were lodged by three MPs and a senator over threatening emails demanding US$100,000 to prevent the release of doctored sex videos by a would-be blackmailer.
Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director M Kumar said the MPs who lodged reports were Wong Chen (Subang) and Dr Taufiq Johari (Sungai Petani) both of PKR, and Wong Chia Zhen (Kulim) of Gerakan, while the senator was Nelson W Angang.
Investigations are being conducted into extortion and misuse of network facilities, he said.
Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli was the first to reveal he had received the email threat. He said last night that the email included a screenshot of a doctored video in which his image had been superimposed.
Other politicians who also received the emails were Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil, who is communications minister; Hang Tuah Jaya MP Adam Adli; Kota Kinabalu MP Chan Foong Hin; Kota Anggerik assemblyman Najwan Halimi; Seri Setia assemblyman Fahmi Ngah, and Senator Manolan Mohamad.
This evening, Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan revealed that he had also been targeted and said he believes that many more MPs were sent similar emails, but may not have realised it.
