JAKARTA, Sept 9 (Bernama) — President Prabowo Subianto has reaffirmed Indonesia’s support for BRICS, describing the group as a pillar of strength amid growing global uncertainty.
He highlighted the bloc’s scale and influence, noting that its members account for more than 55 per cent of the world’s population and over 40 per cent of global gross domestic products.
“Indonesia considers BRICS a very strong pillar of stability and hope in the current international geopolitical situation,” he said at the BRICS Leaders Virtual Meeting on Monday night.
Prabowo urged closer co-operation and coordination among BRICS nations, at a time when the world faces widespread instability and multilateralism is increasingly challenged.
“BRICS brings together the largest economies, the biggest populations, vast markets, and countries rich in critical natural resources. Therefore, BRICS is emerging as a pillar of strength,” he added.
He expressed support for initiatives proposed by China, stressing the importance of openness, adherence to international law, and mutual consultation.
Prabowo noted that in today’s world, ‘might makes right,’ smaller countries risk intimidation or economic coercion, and trade and finance are increasingly used as weapons.
“We consider now this is the time that BRICS must continue to evolve,” he said.
The virtual meeting was attended by leaders and senior representatives of BRICS member countries to discuss global issues of shared concern, according to a statement from the Indonesian Presidential Secretariat.
Among those present were Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Russian President Vladimir Putin, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Crown Prince Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed of Abu Dhabi, representing President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos, and Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
BRICS is a formal intergovernmental organisation composed of a growing number of emerging economies, which includes the original five members (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) and new members like Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan were inducted as partner countries of the BRICS.
