KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s very own Borneo Cultures Museum (BCM) is making waves on the global stage as it climbed to the top of the Museum World Ranking website’s online voting leaderboard, surpassing the iconic Louvre in Paris.
As of 9.50pm today, BCM leads the chart with a whopping 28,047 votes, leaving the Louvre far behind in second place with just 4,043 votes.
Other world-famous names also trail the Sarawak gem, including the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico (4,012 votes), National Palace Museum in Chinese Taipei (4,000), and Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain (3,919).
The Getty Centre and Art Institute of Chicago in the United States, Italy’s Uffizi Galleries, and Canada’s Royal Ontario Museum also made the top 10 list.
Located in Kuching, the five-storey BCM celebrates the region’s vibrant cultural diversity through interactive and thematic galleries — a must-visit for locals and international visitors alike.
The museum is part of the Sarawak Museum Campus project, developed under the Eleventh Malaysia Plan, and has quickly become one of the state’s crown jewels.
By mid-2025, BCM had already welcomed over 1.35 million visitors, according to Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
In October, BCM made its debut on the Museum World Ranking, placing 305th out of 413 museums worldwide.
The top museum, according to the website, is the Vatican Museums, with the Louvre also coming in second in its list.
