GERIK: Police have launched an investigation after the body of a newborn, believed to be a girl, was discovered along the banks of Sungai Air Kala, Selat Pagar, today.
District police chief Superintendent Abdul Samad Othman said a member of the public lodged a report about 2.15pm regarding the discovery.
“Acting on the information, a team of officers was deployed to the scene, where they found the baby’s body.
“The gender and ethnicity have yet to be determined.
“The body has been sent to the Forensic Unit of Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh for a post-mortem,” he said in a statement tonight.
The case is being investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code for concealment of birth by secret disposal of a dead body, which carries a maximum sentence of two years in jail, a fine, or both.
He also reminded the public not to take any action that violates the law, stressing that the police take such cases seriously.
