IPOH: The body of a man, believed to have drowned, was found floating in Sungai Perak near a sand dredging ship tonight about 800m from where he was reported to have fallen at a ship repair workshop in Batu 8, Jalan Maharajalela near Teluk Intan.
Perak Fire and Rescue Department acting assistant director of operations, Shazlean Mohd Hanafiah, said the department received information from a fisherman in the area about the victim, Neoh Jun Jie, 24, who worked as a tyre fitter on the side of a cargo ship, at 9.18pm on Tuesday (Sept 23).
“The victim is believed to have drowned after falling into the river while working on installing tyres on the side of a ship under repair on Monday (Sept 22). The estimated distance from the ship to the riverbank is 10m.
“The victim was brought to a safe location at 9.58pm and handed over to the police for further action. The operation was fully concluded at 10.40pm,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.
He said the fire department received a call about the victim falling into the river at 4.20pm on Monday, and a search and rescue (SAR) operation was immediately launched at 4.41pm.
According to Shazlean, the SAR operation was postponed at 7.15pm on Monday before resuming at 8am on Tuesday. – Bernama
