KUALA LUMPUR: In this special Merdeka Day episode, Beyond the Headlines brings you a story that captures the very essence of what it means to be Malaysian.
Every year, Merdeka Day is a reminder not just of our nation’s freedom, but of the spirit that binds us together — unity in diversity, and love that knows no race or religion.
In this special episode, we spotlight the extraordinary story of Michael Tong, or as many fondly call him, Uncle Mike.
Sixteen years ago, Uncle Mike, a Chinese Malaysian, welcomed into his home three orphaned Malay brothers — Rafei, Rasyid, and Rahman Ahmad Fauzi.
He raised them as his own, ensuring they had not only a home, but also an upbringing rooted in love, education, and faith.
This is not just a story about adoption.
It is a story of fatherhood without borders, of compassion that transcends differences, and of the true meaning of being Malaysian.
Beyond the Headlines is honoured to have Uncle Mike and his sons, Rafei and Rahman, in the studio this week to share their journey — a journey of family, resilience, and the unbreakable bonds that remind us: we are all one.
