PETALING JAYA: Bersatu is holding a meeting of the party’s Supreme Leadership Council (MPT) tonight, which is also expected to discuss the resignation of its president, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, as Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman.
The meeting, held at Bersatu’s headquarters here, is attended by Muhyiddin, deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin, vice president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, as well as MPT members.
Apart from Muhyiddin‘s resignation, the meeting is also expected to deliberate on the political crisis in Perlis last December, which triggered tensions between Bersatu and Pas.
There has also been speculation that Hamzah’s position within Bersatu could be decided tonight, although several leaders who met prior to the meeting denied the claim.
Muhyiddin announced his resignation as PN chairman on Dec 30, which took effect on Jan 1, following the political crisis in Perlis.
His move was followed by four state PN liaison committee chairmen, including PN Selangor chairman Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, who also stepped down as PN secretary-general.
The others were PN Perak liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal (Johor) and Mohamad Hanifah Abu Baker (Negri Sembilan).
