KUALA LUMPUR: Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has clarified that the party has never instructed its Perlis assemblymen to sign any statutory declarations amid the ongoing political crisis in the state.
He said the party submitted the names of its candidates for the menteri besar only after being requested to do so by the Perlis Palace.
He said Bersatu will also hear from its assemblymen to gain a clear understanding of the matter.
“I have been following the political crisis in Perlis following the resignation of Mohd Shukri Ramli as menteri besar.
“I wish to emphasise that no instructions were issued to Bersatu assemblymen in Perlis to sign any statutory declarations,” he said in a statement today.
He said Perikatan Nasional (PN) also respects Pas as the leading party of PN in Perlis.
He expressed hope that the issue regarding the menteri besar’s position can be resolved in the spirit of unity within the PN family.
“I am confident that the component parties of PN have their own methods to handle any arising issues prudently to ensure the stability and continuity of PN’s administration in Perlis.
“I wish to emphasise that PN respects the discretionary authority of the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, and adheres to the Perlis State Constitution in the appointment of the menteri besar.”
It was previously reported that several PN assemblymen in Perlis had allegedly met the ruler to express a loss of confidence in and withdraw support for Mohd Shukri.
Following this, Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang issued a statement saying the party had terminated the membership of its three Perlis assemblymen with immediate effect, in accordance with Clause 76 and Clause 15A(1)(b) of the Pas Constitution (Amendment 2025).
In the 15th general election, Perikatan Nasional won 14 of the 15 state seats, with nine secured by Pas and five by Bersatu, while the remaining seat was won by PKR.
