PETALING JAYA:

Bersatu needs to come up with a “new deal” for Malaysians, starting with a political reset through its vision of a “new national consensus“, says party leader Saifuddin Abdullah.

The Bersatu Supreme Council member said the party might still be young but had birthed two prime ministers in Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Yassin, with the latter’s management of the Covid-19 pandemic said to be globally recognised.

Saifuddin said Bersatu’s MPs had also performed well in the Dewan Rakyat, from debating the 13th Malaysia Plan to demanding justice for the late Zara Qairina Mahathir and pushing for a delay to the Urban Renewal Bill.

Nonetheless, he said Bersatu could not be content with its past successes or depend on the people’s dissatisfaction with the unity government.

Instead, it must become a party that the people actually support, the Indera Mahkota MP said in a column in Sinar Harian.

“Therefore, this year’s annual general assembly must be about arranging our steps forward. We must not simply react to the current situation but plan our actions to chart our future.

“These must be new, concrete and practical steps that will give Malaysians reasonable hope while inspiring their imagination – a new deal for Malaysians,” said the former foreign minister.

Bersatu’s annual general assembly will be held this weekend at the Ideal Convention Centre in Shah Alam.
