BERNAMA - Zakat Institutions, Private Sector Partnership Expands Islamic Welfare Network

SEPANG, Nov 5 (Bernama) — Collaboration between state zakat institutions and the private sector in assisting asnaf individuals (tithe recipients) to perform umrah (minor haj) is crucial to widening the network of Islamic welfare in the country, says Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar.

He said initiatives such as the Umrah 1,000 Asnaf campaign, organised by Ikhlas Com Travel & Umrah Sdn Bhd (ikhlas.com) in collaboration with state zakat institutions, demonstrate efforts to ensure that zakat benefits are channelled not only towards basic needs, but also to fulfilling the spiritual aspirations of underprivileged groups.

“Such initiatives not only provide the opportunity to perform umrah, but also reflect a shared sense of social responsibility between the government, religious institutions and the private sector,” he told reporters after meeting the Umrah 1,000 Asnaf pilgrims at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 2 here today.

Mohd Na’im also described the initiative as an example of how technology can help strengthen the delivery of welfare assistance.

“Data on asnaf provided by state zakat institutions plays a crucial role in ensuring that aid is directed to those who are truly eligible,” he said.

Meanwhile, ikhlas.com chief executive officer Ikhlas Kamarudin said the Umrah 1,000 Asnaf campaign, launched in March, was implemented using asnaf data provided by the respective state zakat institutions.

He said the approach allows for more precise selection of participants, ensuring that the opportunity to perform umrah is granted to those who genuinely deserve and need it.
