JOHOR BAHRU, Sept 7 (Bernama) — Allocations worth RM115,000 under the Sekijang parliamentary constituency Mesra Rakyat Project have been approved to resolve safety and facility issues in two non-Muslim houses of worship and a surau in Segamat.

Sekijang Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the allocations are for the Wesley Methodist Church, the Hua Kwong Kong Temple and Surau Al-Abidin in Kampung Tengah to ensure the public, regardless of race and religion, can carry out their religious activities comfortably and safely.

“For the Wesley Methodist Church, RM50,000 was approved to build a 152.4-metre (500 feet)-long BRC fence around the church grounds after its management reported about an encroachment by a wild animal from the nearby river and farm areas. Since the fence was put up, there have been no more such incidents.

“The Hua Kwong Kong Temple, meanwhile, received RM50,000 to resurface the previously uneven and damaged roads in the temple area, which proved to be a problem for worshippers, especially the elderly. With the concrete resurfacing completed, the temple management said they have not received any more complaints from devotees,” she posted on Facebook today.

Dr Zaliha, who was formerly the Health Minister, said Surau Al-Abidin in Kampung Tengah also received an allocation of RM15,000 to repaint the interior and exterior of the surau that was damaged due to floods.

She added that the surau is used for Friday prayers and is the heart of worship for the local community.

“Alhamdulillah, the surau now has a new facade and provides comfort for the congregation to worship. This is how we do it in Sekijang. We listen to the people’s problems, evaluate them and solve them. This allocation is not my money, but the people’s money… I’m only a trustee,” she said.
