TAIPING, Aug 3 (Bernama) — The Perak government has expressed its continued commitment to efforts in protecting endangered species, particularly the Malayan tiger, which is an icon of the nation’s natural heritage.

State Science, Environment and Green Technology Committee chairman (Exco), Teh Kok Lim said that among these efforts is the role played by Zoo Taiping & Night Safari (ZTNS), which is not only a premier tourist destination but also a crucial conservation centre for protecting endangered species in the country.

“The Malayan tiger is a symbol of our national pride. However, the reality today is that it is on the brink of extinction and categorised as a critically endangered species.

“Therefore, commitment to conservation efforts must be a shared responsibility,” he said when officiating at the 64th Anniversary Celebration of ZTNS here last night, which was also attended by Taiping Municipal Council president, Khairul Amir Mohamad Zubir.

Teh said that in line with the role of ZTNS, the tourist attraction has organised various high-impact programmes focusing on education and environmental sustainability.

Meanwhile, Khairul Amir stated that as the oldest zoo in the country, ZTNS plays an active role in conservation, including ex-situ breeding (outside of natural habitat) of endangered species, collaboration with research institutions, and participation in animal rehabilitation and release programmes.

He said this includes species such as the Malayan tiger, Asian elephant, and tapir, which are national treasures.

In conjunction with the 64th anniversary celebration of ZTNS, he said various exciting activities were held, including the launch of the Hop-On Hop-Off (HOHO) Bus service, offering visitors a new experience to explore key attractions around Taiping town in an informative manner.

“Looking ahead, several engaging and educational programmes have been planned for the year.

“Among the key upcoming programmes are the World Orangutan Day Celebration on Aug 30, the annual Zoorama 2025 from Sept 13 to 21, and Taiping Bird Week from Oct 10 to 12,” he said.

The event also witnessed the launch of ZTNS’s new logo and slogan to further strengthen the zoo’s role as one of the country’s key conservation centres.
