KUANTAN, Aug 5 (Bernama) — Pahang is the second-highest contributor in agriculture sales value in Malaysia, with a total of RM25.12 billion in 2023, and remains a major national agricultural player.
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said that the crop subsector contributed the majority of the total at RM22.11 billion (88.0 per cent), followed by livestock at RM1.21 billion (4.8 per cent), fishery RM0.91 billion (3.6 per cent), forestry and logging at RM0.56 billion (2.2 per cent) and aquaculture at RM0.33 billion (1.3 per cent).
“Cameron Highlands remains as the pioneer in vegetable production in Malaysia with a sales value of RM3.60 billion, while Pahang is also the main oil palm producer in Peninsular Malaysia with a sales value of RM14.18 billion, dominated by the districts of Rompin, Pekan and Bera,” he said during a media conference at the launch of the Pahang Agriculture Census Interim Report 2024 at a hotel here today.
Mohd Uzir, who is also Agriculture Census 2024 commissioner, said they supported state government efforts to produce an agriculture sector in line with the strategies outlined in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).
“Looking at the focus on this high-value sector as a priority in our efforts to drive the national agriculture sector, I believe that the state government is very wise about this matter and we at the Department of Statistics Malaysia and other related agencies will continue to support by producing data that can speed up the development process,” he said, adding that the Pahang Agriculture Interim Census 2024 will indirectly help the state government assess the effectiveness of the agriculture sector.
“Actually, the data will reduce uncertainty as it can balance market prices even though we’re latecomers. The management of the agriculture sector in the country is progressing as it has accurate data,” Mohd Uzir said.
Meanwhile, state Agriculture, Agro-Industries, Biotechnology and Education Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Sofi Abd Razak said during the launch that a proactive approach between the state and federal governments has proven the state’s determination in ensuring the continuity of agricultural projects.
Land-related issues would not be obstacles in implementing agriculture projects, he added.
