BUKIT MERTAJAM, Sept 15 (Bernama) — More than 34,000 WiFi access points have been installed across nearly all public higher education institutions (IPTA) nationwide as part of efforts to upgrade internet connectivity.

Communications Minister Datuk Fadzil said the Higher Education Ministry (MoHE) has also requested additional access points, as some campuses did not submit applications during the first and second phases of implementation.

“I have asked the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to study these requests, and we will try to implement them as soon as possible.

“The total number cannot yet be confirmed, as MCMC needs to conduct a detailed study of the campuses seeking WiFi facilities,” he told reporters after inspecting the IPTA WiFi project at the Seberang Perai Polytechnic here today.

The project, under the Jalinan Digital Negara (JENDELA) initiative overseen by MCMC, is aimed at strengthening high-speed internet coverage across IPTA campuses nationwide.

Providing a more stable and comprehensive network for students and staff is in line with the MADANI Government’s commitment to expanding digital access to all segments of society.

Meanwhile, , who is on a three-day working visit to Penang, expressed satisfaction with the internet speed at the Seberang Perai Polytechnic, which is equipped with 554 access points delivering speeds of over 300Mbps through WiFi 7 devices.

“This is a positive development. Previously, especially in hostels, students living on higher floors could not access WiFi. Now, nearly every room is covered.

“This makes it much easier for them to complete assignments, conduct research and revision, and carry out other academic tasks,” he said.

Earlier, also spent time engaging with 70 students who took part in the Safe Internet Campaign, including participants who joined virtually.

The campaign seeks to empower youth in cyber safety and digital literacy, focusing on four key issues with significant impact on young people — online scams, cyberbullying, risks of oversharing personal information, and the spread of false information.

Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa and MCMC managing director Abdul Karim Fakir Ali.
