KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 19 (Bernama) — The Ministry of Health (MOH) plans to merge the Simpudu and Biau Rural Clinics (Klinik Desa) in Sabah, as well as upgrade the facilities to a Type 3 Health Clinic at a new site to offer more comprehensive and quality access to health services for the villagers.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, in a post on Facebook, stated that this initiative of upgrade (Type 3 Clinic: 300-to-500 in daily patient volume; Type 7 lowest) reflects MOH’s commitment to ensuring that the people of Sabah continue to receive the best, safest and most comfortable treatment, despite challenges posed by the environment and infrastructure.

“The ministry has also approved an allocation of RM1 million next year to demolish the old structure of KD Simpudu and build a new clinic on an adjacent site as the existing clinic is no longer safe to use due to land subsidence caused by river bank erosion.

“KD Simpudu has been operating since 2011, serving as the mainstay of primary health services for more than 6,229 residents,” he said.

He had inspected both village clinics in conjunction with the working visit to Sabah.

KD Biau, he said has been operating since 2004 and is the main referral for 5,056 residents, and will temporarily accommodate all patients from KD Simpudu for a period of six to nine months during the construction of the new clinic.

“I have also instructed minor repair works at the back of KD Biau to convert it into a covered parking lot and a shared waiting area, to provide better comfort for patients from both clinics,” he said.

After inspecting KD Biau, he continued his working visit to KD Gadong which has also been operating since 2004 and currently serves more than 8,700 residents.

KD Biau is the health facility most severely affected by the recent floods among the nine MOH clinics impacted in Sabah.

To ensure services are uninterrupted, an immediate allocation of RM50,000 has been approved for the purpose of replacing damaged equipment.

“Looking at the risks faced, long-term measures also need to be planned. Therefore, I have instructed the Sabah State Health Department to identify a new site on federal land to rebuild KD Gadong.

“This is because the existing location is in a high-risk area and is vulnerable to flooding. Hopefully, this initiative will not only ensure that health services can be restored speedily, but also guarantee safety, comfort and continuity of medical care for the local community in the long term,” he said.
