BERNAMA - Ethical Use Of Internet, Social Media Essential

, Aug 25 (Bernama) — The public has been urged to be more careful and ethical when using the internet and social media, in line with rapid technological advancements and increasingly complex cybersecurity challenges.

Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin said this was also in line with laws that regulate online behaviour, including recent amendments covering physical, verbal and cyberbullying.

“Our awareness must be high, especially in understanding that there are laws to ensure safe internet use. Everyone also needs to keep up with the latest amendments, such as the Penal Code relating to bullying in all forms.

“So when we choose to use the internet, we must be ready to face these realities,” she told reporters after attending the Finance Ministry’s Association of Wives and Women Members of the Malaysian Civil Service (Puspanita) Women’s Day celebration here today.

Nur-ul Afida said the internet should be used positively and not misused to create provocative or sensational content.

“If possible, let us use the internet for good, not just to create content. Facts matter, and if we ignore them, it can bring harm to ourselves, our families, our workplace and even the country,” she said.

She also highlighted the importance of relying on trusted news sources such as Bernama and RTM, which uphold professional journalism ethics.

Earlier, Nur-ul Afida shared her 40 years of experience in journalism with more than 100 members of the Finance Ministry’s Puspanita during a forum titled “Building a Legacy: The Voice, Spirit and Hopes of Malaysian Women.”

Taking inspiration from her late father, AR Kamaludin, whom she regarded as her role model, Nur-ul Afida, who was also a recipient of the Women of the Decade award at the Women Economic Forum ASEAN 2025, said his determination and strong work ethic continue to guide her.

“I come from a family of journalists. My father did many jobs to support the family, and we (siblings) were taught that sacrifices are needed to achieve our goals.

“As women, we wear many hats…as wives, mothers, sisters and workers. I want to stress that age should never be a barrier to pursuing our passion and achieving what we want,” she said.
