SEREMBAN, Sept 24 (Bernama) — The inaugural ASEAN-China Women’s Wushu Championships 2025 has been hailed as a symbol of unity, peace and friendship, said Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
Dr Wan Azizah, the Prime Minister’s wife, said the competition, hosted in Malaysia, is the first of its kind and is expected to strengthen ties between ASEAN member states and China through sports and cultural exchanges.
She added that the gathering of athletes, coaches, officials, and supporters from across ASEAN and China, noting that the event reflected a strong spirit of solidarity.
“I am grateful today to be part of the inaugural ASEAN-China Women’s Wushu Championships 2025. This historic gathering brings together athletes, coaches, officials and friends from across ASEAN and China united not only in sport, but in the spirit of peace, friendship and mutual respect,” she said during her speech at the 1st ASEAN-China Women’s Wushu Championships 2025 here today.
Also present were Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh and ASEAN-China Wushu Federation founding president Datuk Dr King Fatt.
Dr Wan Azizah also congratulated the national wushu team for their outstanding performance at the recent World Games in Chengdu, China, where Malaysia bagged five gold medals, including in the women’s team event.
She added that these victories not only made Malaysia proud but also showed the immense potential of women athletes in lifting the spirit of the nation.
In addition, she also reminded athletes of the importance of taking care of their physical and mental health.
“Your body is your most precious instrument. Listen to it. Nurture it with proper rest, hydration and nutrition. But remember, self-care extends beyond the physical. The pressure of competition can be immense. Take moments to be mindful, to breathe and to ‘centre’ yourselves. Your well-being is the true foundation upon which victory is built,” she said.
She also emphasised the importance of sportsmanship, urging athletes to respect their opponents and value the friendships built through competition.
During the event, Dr Wan Azizah was honoured with the ASEAN-China Women’s Inspirational Leadership Award 2025, Hannah received the ASEAN-China Women’s Sports Development Catalyst Award, and Prof Lin Xiaomei was presented with the ASEAN-China Women’s Global Sports Leadership Award.
Hannah, when met by reporters, said that in conjunction with Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship this year, the tournament is extremely important, particularly in providing exposure to more local exponents to compete at the ASEAN level.
“The ministry intends to take ASEAN programmes to every state with various types of events, and this state was chosen to organise wushu,” she said.
Hannah, in her speech, said that the government has reaffirmed its strong belief in the talent and potential of Malaysia’s national wushu exponents, with more than RM4.3 million invested in the sport this year alone through the National Sports Council (NSC).
She said this significant investment has already shown promising returns, reflected in the national contingent’s recent outstanding achievements on the international stage.
“I extend my gratitude to the organisers, the participating countries, and all who have made this tournament possible. And to the participants, I wish you the best. May this be the beginning of many more platforms where women in sport can excel, inspire and lead,” she added.
A total of 60 exponents from all ASEAN countries and China are taking part in the six-day championships, which will end on Friday (Sept 26).
