KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 (Bernama) — The upcoming Asian Clubs Sepak Takraw League (ACSL) has the potential to adopt a format similar to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League to attract wider interest among fans of the sport.

Datuk Abdul Halim Kader, President of the Asian Sepak Takraw Federation (ASTAF), said the ACSL could feature two divisions, akin to the AFC Champions League Elite and AFC Champions League Two.

He mentioned that this matter was discussed during a meeting with AFC Secretary-General Datuk Seri Windsor Paul John at the AFC House, Bukit Jalil, recently.

“During the one-hour meeting, Windsor provided strong support and valuable advice regarding the competition format, club selection, licensing, player registration, and strategies for attracting sponsors, as well as the integration of sports science and sports technology,” he said in an ASTAF statement today.

“This session also covered the Operations Manual, a more robust and attractive competition structure, governance, and best practices in sports management.”

He added that through this meeting, ASTAF gained fresh perspectives and strategic insights to strengthen the governing body’s movement and further elevate sepak takraw on the global stage.

“The reason ASTAF chose to refer to and seek guidance from the AFC is that they are recognised as a world-class governance model and an organisation that has achieved sporting excellence,” said Abdul Halim, who is also the Secretary-General of the International Sepak Takraw Federation (ISTAF).

“Therefore, ASTAF is determined to adopt the same strategy in driving the development, professionalism, and international recognition of sepak takraw.”

In addition, Abdul Halim stated that ASTAF will hold a follow-up meeting with the AFC, bringing a special technical research group to strengthen cooperation between the two parties.

For the record, the ACSL is expected to commence in 2026 or 2027, bringing together the best clubs from eight to 10 ASTAF member nations.
