MUAR: A 41-year-old beauty centre employee was fined RM2,000 by the magistrate’s court here today after she pleaded guilty to prostitution at a hotel here on July 20.
Magistrate Suzana Mokhtar handed down the sentence to Tan Chia Chia, a single mother.
The court also ordered six months’ jail in default of payment.
Tan was charged with soliciting for the purpose of prostitution at a hotel along Jalan Abdullah, here, at 5.40pm on July 20.
The offence under Section 372B of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail term of one year, a fine, or both, upon conviction.
According to the facts of the case, police raided the hotel room following a tip-off on illicit activity and found Tan with a male client.
A search of the room uncovered used and unused condoms, wet tissues and RM250 in cash, believed to be payment for services rendered.
Deputy public prosecutors Yasmin Mohd Piah and Nur Ameerah Allaudeen prosecuted, while Norhafizah Abdullah of the National Legal Aid Foundation represented Tan.
