KOTA KINABALU: The Beaufort district has been declared a disaster area following floods caused by continuous heavy rain.
Beaufort District Disaster Management Committee chairman Mohd Nazri Ajun said the declaration was made based on field reports and information from agencies within the committee. He said the Permanent Relief Centre (PPK) in Selagon had been activated to house affected residents.
“The Selagon PPK was opened after inspections found that the areas and homes of the disaster-affected residents were unsafe to occupy,” said Nazri.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian Meteorological Department has issued a thunderstorm and heavy rain warning until 6pm today for several areas, including Kota Kinabalu, Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Tuaran, Kota Belud, Sipitang, Tenom, Kuala Penyu, Tambunan, Kota Marudu, Pitas, and Beaufort.
