PETALING JAYA:

Malaysian badminton singles coach Wong Tat Meng is in critical condition after being involved in a motorcycle accident in Sydney, Australia, on Sunday, according to news reports.

The crash reportedly involved two motorcycles, and the other motorcyclist died at the scene. Tat Meng was treated by paramedics before being airlifted to a hospital.

Former national player and coach James Selvaraj confirmed that Tat Meng is currently in intensive care, NST reported.

Tat Meng used to coach men’s singles player Lee Zii Jia before he went independent, guiding the Kedahan shuttler in returning to the world’s top 10, winning titles, and securing the bronze medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

They parted ways at the end of last year.

He previously coached the Hong Kong and South Korean national badminton teams.

He also had two stints with the Badminton Association of Malaysia, where he served as coach for both the men’s and women’s singles teams from 2003 to 2011 and 2013 to 2016.
