Perikatan Nasional (PN) secretary-general Azmin Ali has confirmed that the coalition has held some form of informal discussions with MCA and MIC, both of which are components of the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN).
Azmin said both MCA and MIC acknowledged that the policies introduced by the former PN government led by Muhyiddin Yassin were fair and represented all Malaysians.
“Yes, informal meetings and discussions did take place because they are our friends,” Azmin said according to Sinar Harian.
When asked whether these discussions could lead to the parties joining PN, Azmin said it was too early to arrive at that conclusion.
However, he said: “It’s a good start when two groups are willing to sit down and talk. From there, we will find common ground and combine our interests to come up with the best solutions for the people.”
The Bersatu secretary-general added that PN was not holding informal talks only with MCA and MIC.
“Such discussions always take place, not only with MCA or MIC, but with all parties that are ready to work together in uniting coalitions that place the people’s interests above partisan or personal concerns.”
Azmin added that MCA and MIC’s experience in government could help Bersatu and PN shape more progressive policies as Malaysia continues to face economic headwinds.
“We need fresh perspectives, new ideas, including from the younger generation, on how we can provide solutions for those who need support from the government,” said the former Selangor menteri besar.
MCA and MIC are long-time components of the Umno-led BN, which is a key partner of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s unity government.
BN was also a key ally in Muhyiddin‘s government, giving the Bersatu president its backing for the top post following the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government in February 2020.
In June, MCA president Wee Ka Siong said the party’s 191 divisions would discuss its future amid discontent over its lack of influence in the government, and bring their proposals to the annual general meeting in October.
MIC also said it was prepared to engage in discussions with any political party to ensure its survival and better serve the Indian community.
However, BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi recently said that MCA and MIC’s top leaders had not discussed leaving the coalition with him.
The Umno president also said that they had not tabled the matter for discussion at a recent BN Supreme Council meeting.
