Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission head Azam Baki’s contract extension was described today as “unwelcome” .
PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar, in a post on X, said her party needs to stand for reforms, and called for the support of the rakyat and members in order to carry it out.
“We ask brave and courageous civil servants and personalities to rise to the occasion,” she said.
Azam’s contract extension was announced yesterday by the government. His new one-year term begins on May 13.
His contract had been extended twice since he took office in March 2020 following the resignation of Latheefa Koya, after the fall of the former Pakatan Harapan government.
When the unity coalition government was formed in December 2022, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim defended his decision not to replace Azam, saying he wanted to break the convention that a change of guard in the agency was necessary whenever a new prime minister was appointed.
