Aug 19 hearing on motion to exhume body of Palapes cadet

KUALA LUMPUR: The Shah Alam High Court has set Aug 19 to hear a notice of motion seeking to exhume the body of deceased Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Reserve Officers’ Training Unit (Palapes) cadet Syamsul Haris Shamsudin, 22.

This follows the motion filed by Syamsul Haris’s mother, Ummu Haiman Bee Daulatgun, 45, to exhume the body for a second post-mortem and to initiate an inquest into his death.

Ummu Haiman’s lawyer, Datuk Seri Naran Singh, confirmed this with the New Straits Times.

Syamsul Haris died on July 28 at the Kota Tinggi Hospital in Johor during training at the Combat Inoculation Firing Range of the Army Combat Training Centre in Ulu Tiram, Johor.

He was buried on July 29 at the Kampung Riching Ulu Muslim Cemetery in .

According to court documents filed by Messrs Naran Singh & Co, Ummu Haiman, as the applicant, named Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail and Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar as respondents.

She applied for Syamsul Haris’s body to be exhumed so that a post-mortem could be conducted in the presence of forensic expert Datuk Seri Dr Bhupinder Singh and Naran Singh, both of whom she had appointed.

She also requested that federal police set up a task force to take over investigations into Syamsul Haris’s death.

“This is in light of the investigating officer having issued a media statement saying there were no criminal-related injuries.

“Therefore, he is unsuitable to continue with the investigations involving my son.

“I ask for a task force to handle the investigations, as in the case of Zara Qairina Mahathir,” the document read.

Ummu Haiman believes the continuous bleeding from her son’s nose suggests he may have been assaulted and suffered brain and chest injuries.

Johor police chief Commissioner Ab Rahaman Arsad said police are waiting for the full post-mortem report before completing the investigation.
