At Apec, Anwar warns against tech without morality

GYEONGJU: Technological progress, including the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), must be achieved without sacrificing the environment or our moral compass, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ibrahim today.

He said the development of an AI-based economic infrastructure must go in tandem with commitments to renewable energy, sustainability, and the responsibility to safeguard future generations.

“More than half a century ago, German philosopher Martin Heidegger reminded us that the essence of technology does not lie in the machines we build.

“It is rather in how technology reshapes the way we think, behave, and understand the purpose of life. That reminder remains relevant today,” he said.

He said this when delivering Malaysia’s statement during the second session of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Economic Leaders’ Meeting here.

He added that whether society worships or rejects technology, there remains a risk of becoming dependent on it.

“I believe that to remain humane, this issue must be addressed, and Apec must take the lead.

“Of course, in Malaysia, we believe in and promote AI and semiconductor technologies, as technology has the power to advance civilisation,” he said.

Malaysia, he added, also supports the use of AI to boost knowledge, accelerate innovation, expand opportunities and improve societal well-being.

“We welcome investments in data centres, digital capacity development and the promise of new jobs and industries.”

He added that today’s discussions must also address the growing anxiety among the younger generation about the elite.

“There has been a loss of values and a lack of clarity in matters of justice and humanity — a trend seen even in developed nations.”
