The 43rd Asean Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) begins today, marking a major milestone in the region’s energy cooperation and clean transition efforts.
The four-day meeting will see the launch of the Asean Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation 2026-2030, alongside the signing of two key memoranda of understanding: the Asean Power Grid (APG) and Asean Petroleum Security Agreement.
These landmark agreements aim to strengthen cross-border electricity connectivity, enhance regional energy security, and accelerate renewable energy integration across Southeast Asia.
Asean energy ministers, senior officials, dialogue partners and representatives from the International Energy Agency, International Renewable Energy Agency as well as major development banks are attending the sessions.
The programme also features the Minister-CEO Dialogue, the Asean Energy Awards, and related meetings such as the Asean Senior Officials Meeting on Energy plus Three and the East Asia Summit Energy Ministers’ Meeting.
Malaysia’s priorities
Malaysia, as Asean chair, is steering discussions towards a just, inclusive, and innovation-driven energy transition.
Malaysia’s priorities include advancing the APG, strengthening renewable energy financing, and promoting clean hydrogen and energy storage technologies.
It is also championing the creation of a regional just energy transition facility to ensure that all Asean member states, particularly less developed economies, benefit from access to technology, capacity-building, and sustainable financing.
Outcomes from the 43rd AMEM will feed into Asean’s long-term roadmap for an integrated, secure and low-carbon energy future, as ministers reaffirm their commitment to shared prosperity through sustainable growth.
